by J. G.Mozilla has a project underway to improve the performance of Firefox on Linux. We will have to wait until at least the release of engine 6 with GCC 4.5 compilation though.
Firefox_4logoThe Firefox experience isn’t the same under Windows and Linux. Mozilla has notice this and are now looking to improve the performance of Firefox on Linux.
Mozilla developer Mike Hommey recently indicated that a faster version of Firefox for Linux is expected, with the release to provide performance closer resembling that seen in Windows. The solution should be simple as the compilation will be built on GCC 4.5.
Mike Hommey states "This means we are finally using a more modern toolchain, opening opportunities for things such as static analysis. This also means we are now producing a faster Firefox, now much closer to the Windows builds on the same hardware on various performance tests". The current GNU Compiler Collection is currently version 4.6.
The optimisation of GCC 4.5 won’t be made straight away though, and we will have to wait for Firefox 6 which should be published later in the year (Firefox 5 is planned for release in the summer). This is the Linux engine for Firefox distributed by Mozilla.
Obviously to improve the performance of Firefox for Linux, Mozilla would need to work distribution editors, and this is already the case. The majority of Linux distributions offer Firefox as their default browser, but the "threat" of Google Chrome is ever-present. Could this be why they are suddenly paying it more interest?
